Itzulia (1) : First gaps in Bilbao

The Itzulia Basque Country (2.UWT, 05-10/04) kicked off this Monday with an individual time trial of 13.8km on the outskirts of Bilbao. Two climbs stood in front of the riders on this explosive course: San Domingo (2.5km at 6,9%) shortly after the start, and the final ascent which leads straight to the finish (0.5 km to 9,8%). In addition to these two difficulties, the riders had to deal with the technical descent of San Domingo, which included many curves, and strong wind which hampered the riders' crossing along the Ria de Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) covered the distance of this inaugural stage as the fastest time with 17:17", therefore earning the first leader's jersey of the race. For Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux, it was the opportunity to appreciate the first pedal strokes of Quinten Hermans on the roads in 2021. The Belgian also set the team's best time in 18:38". Tomorrow, 154 kilometers will lead the peloton from Zalla to Sestao, where multiple second and third category climbs will precede an uphill finish of 800 meters at an average gradient of 7.4%.
