UAE Tour (1) : In the right move, Minali will try again

UAE Tour (1) : In the right move, Minali will try again

The first World Tour race of the year took off in dramatic fashion. Echelons formed after only 400 meters in the desert of the UAE Tour (2.UWT - 21-27/02), causing a wind of panic in a peloton now split into several groups. The calm retrieved allowed a temporary regroup, but the intermediate sprint located at 110 kilometers from the finish re-launched hostilities.

A group of around twenty riders were leading, including our Italian sprinter Riccardo Minali, the sole representative of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux at the front of the race. But the frantic pace imposed from the start eventually got the better of Minali, and suddenly the entire team was in pursuit. The victory was therefore played between the twenty riders and Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) proved the fastest. The peloton with all the riders of the team crossed the line eight-and-a-half minutes later. Tomorrow, the peloton of the UAE Tour will complete an individual time trial of 13 kilometers.

Riccardo Minali:
“I had good legs and was able to jump in when the front group of 26 came off. I made a big effort to come back, but I kept riding in order to avoid taking too much wind. Unfortunately, I still found myself at the back of the group after taking my turn I lost contact with wheel in front of me and never got back. It's a shame, especially when you see the outcome of the stage. But I have a good condition and I want to demonstrate it in the next steps. There are normally three chances left in the sprint! "

Valerio Piva (Sports director):
« Deceuninck-Quick Step launched their move before the intermediate sprint, and it never came back. Once I heard that they had 5 men in front, with Van der Poel, Pogacar, Yates, I understood that it was the right move because few teams had interest to ride behind. The situation was ideal for us because Riccardo had caught the right move. Unfortunately, he was dropped from the front and our day was over. For the general classification, the final winner was ahead today. Everyone will do their best in the time trial, then we'll see where our climbers are in Jebel Hafeet. The week is still long, and we will have to remain attentive to the echelons every day because the wind is blowing hard here!  »
