Second place for Lorenzo Rota

This Wednesday, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux finished second in both the Grand Prix de Wallonie and the Giro della Toscana thanks to Biniam Girmay and Lorenzo Rota, who both concluded great teamwork.

Earlier in the afternoon, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux started its series of Italian classics with the Giro della Toscana, the first of nine one day races on Italian soil in the next month.

The Walloon team took its responsibility on the double ascension of Monte Serra (11km at 7%), the only difficulty on the parcours. His teammates set the pace, skimming the peloton and enabling Lorenzo Rota to reach the top in a group of four riders in chase of leader Daniel Martinez.

The efforts of the vice Italian champion were rewarded as with 5 kilometer to go he was leading the race with four others. One year after his fourth place on the same circuit, Rota took second place in the sprint, defeated by Marc Hirschi. It is his fifth podium of the season.

« I want to thank my teammates for their support today! It is thanks to their work that I could sprint for the victory today. Even though I wanted to win, this second place was probably the best possible result today against a fast rider such as Marc Hirschi. I even reached my personal power record in the sprint with backwind today. My performance was a successful test two days after ending my altitude camp in Livigno and in the approach towards the world championships. Before I leave for Australia, I want to try my best again with the team in the Coppa Sabatini tomorrow, a classic which also suits Andrea Pasqualon very well. »
