INTERMARCHÉ

Antwerp Port Epic

3 riders in the top 10

This Sunday, not less than 35 kilometer of unpaved roads and 28 kilometer of cobble sections had to be covered in the Antwerp Port Epic (1.1).

From the first unpaved road after 55 kilometer of racing, the six riders of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux were omnipresent in the front of the peloton and was caught after two strong accelerations.

As more and more riders were in difficulty at the back of the peloton, all riders of the Belgian World Team were present in a group of 30 survivors with two race hours to go. Several attacks resulted in a leading group of six men, among whom Adrien Petit.

This group of six riders rapidly gained a big advantage on the peloton and played a tactical game in the final. Frenchman Adrien Petit crossed the line in fifth place. 3 minutes later, Gerben Thijssen won the sprint for seventh place thanks to the help of his teammates. Andrea Pasqualon concluded the top ten.

« We managed to finish with three riders in the top ten today by positioning very well as a team during the whole race. From the first unpaved section after 55 kilometer you couldn’t take any moment of rest at the back. It was a particularly challenging classic. Collectively, we were strong and represented in all moves in the final. It is in this way that I joined the final breakaway in the last 30 kilometer. I wanted to ride full gas to the finish and sprint for the victory, but we immediately had a big gap and this resulted in a tactical game. The several rhythm changes exhausted everyone and in the end I crossed the line in fifth position. This was only my second race weekend after a long training period and I feel that my form is getting better, so I’m looking forward to the Tour of Norway! »
