European Championship

Eiking (23rd) hung on as long as possible

There were many possibilities for the race scenario of the European Championships (12/09) this Sunday, but not many people predicted such an elimination race on the parcours around Trento. The race was animated from the start thanks to a breakaway of four riders, which was joined by eight others later. Odd Christian Eiking and Rein Taaramäe knew that they had to be attentive from the beginning and showed their jerseys from the Norwegian and Estonian national team regularly in the front of the peloton. The riders of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert were also close to each other on the Monte Bondone, where they survived a first big selection. The Belgian and French team continued the high pace on the local laps in order to further eliminate the sprinters. In the end, only a handful of riders remained in the battle for the title. Simone Colbrelli defeated Remco Evenepoel in a sprint and kept the title for the fourth year in a row in the Italian team. Odd Christian Eiking crossed the line in 23rd place.
