Liège-Bastogne-Liège

A big event with a particular taste for Domenico Pozzovivo

Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux will line up for the fourth Monument of the season this Sunday on the occasion of Liège-Bastogne-Liège (1.UWT, 24/04). Ten categorized climbs are spread over the parcours of the 108th edition of “La Doyenne” in which more than 4000 meters have to be climbed.

The riders have to accomplish 100 kilometer to reach Bastogne from the start on the Quai des Ardennes, with the climbs of La Roche-en-Ardenne and Saint-Roch after 73 and 123 kilometer. The third categorized climb of the day, Mont-le-Soie, is the first hill in a succession of the traditional obstacles in the final 100 kilometer.

The peloton will have to cover the Côte de Wanne (3.5km at 5%), Côte de Stockeu (1km at 12.5%), Haute Levée (2.2km at 7.5%), Col du Rosier (4.4km at 5.9%), Côte de Desnié (1.6 km at 7.5%) and Col de la Redoute (1.1km at 6.1%) before the Roche-aux-Faucons (1.3km at 10.5%), with its top situated 10 kilometer before the finish line along the Meuse river.

From the seven riders in the selection directed by Valerio Piva, Jean-Marc Rossignon and Hilaire Van der Schueren, five were present in La Flèche Wallonne last Wednesday. After his fifteenth place on top of the Mur de Huy, Domenico Pozzovivo returns to the race in which he distinguished himself with a fifth place in 2014 and 2018, an eighth place in 2015 and a twelfth place in 2017.

Jan Bakelants participated ten times in Liège-Bastogne-Liège already and will line up for his 25th Monument this Sunday. They will race alongside Quinten Hermans, Simone Petilli and Georg Zimmermann, who were also present in La Flèche Wallonne. Baptiste Planckaert, one of the contributors to the impressive Paris-Roubaix of the Belgian World Team, and Corné van Kessel, who will participate in his first Monument of his career, complete the line up.

« Each season, Liège-Bastogne-Liège is a major appointment in Belgium and this edition will even be more special, because I will defend the colors of a Belgian team. I will definitely receive the support of our fans on the mythical climbs. Last Wednesday I had a good feeling on the Mur de Huy, which reassured me after having to leave the Tour of Sicily on the final day because of illness last week. The top fifteen was a good result, but for this Sunday I dare to dream of more. Liège-Bastogne-Liège suits me better, as there's usually a bigger selection and the positioning plays a less important role. On Thursday we did the recon of the difficulties in the final 100 kilometer with the team. My ideal scenario would be a race in which the peloton will be worn out due to the intense succession of climbs, so a strongly reduced group starts La Roche-aux-Focons. »
