Milano - Torino

Girmay & Kristoff major contenders in the oldest race in history

Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux will be present in the oldest race of the world on the occasion of   Milano – Torino (1.Pro, 16/02). The 103rd edition of this classic which was organized for the first time in 1876, is the last race on Italian soil before Milano-San Remo, the first Monument of the season three days later.

Just like in 2020, the organization chose for a parcours for sprinters, in contrary to the traditional finish on top of Superga, where Rein Taaramäe finished fourteenth last year. The trajectory connects Magenta with Rivoli in 199 kilometer and offers a slightly hilly profile in the second race half from the entry in the Canavese region.

The Belgian World Team will line up with Alexander Kristoff and Biniam Girmay, both winners this season in the sprint in the Clasica de Almeria and the Trofeo Alcudia. Another fast rider, Andrea Pasqualon will be accompanied by his compatriots Lorenzo Rota, fourth in the Trofeo Laigueglia, and Simone Petilli, ninth in the Strade Bianche. Loïc Vliegen and Georg Zimmermann left Paris-Nice for Italy last Sunday to complete the selection directed by Valerio Piva and Ioannis Tamouridis.

« The atmosphere reigning in each Italian race makes it always a true pleasure to race on home soil. In addition, this Wednesday, the start of Milano-Torino is close to my home so it will be a good opportunity to meet many familiar faces. I know the region quite well thanks to my multiple participations in the event, even though the parcours lead to the Basilica of Superga. Knowing the roads is always an important factor and I want to use this advantage to work for our leaders this Wednesday. I've already shown this season that I can be useful in the final of difficult races and this is also my intention in support of our strong group of sprinters. It would be a fantastic achievement if one of them could add the oldest classic in history to his palmares and to the one of the team! »
