Scheldeprijs – G. Thijssen “It would be an honor to prepare the sprint for Alexander Kristoff”

The Scheldeprijs (1.Pro) is the traditional meeting for sprinters in Schoten on the Wednesday after the Tour of Flanders. For the fourth time in a recent history, the classic of 198.7 kilometer connects Dutch city Terneuzen (Zealand) with the suburbs of Antwerp.

After a parade on the Stadhuisplein, the red flag will go down after the crossing of the Westerschelde tunnel. The two first race hours through the open fields in Zealand are favorable for the creation of echelons. The crosswinds are one of the principal difficulties for the riders, as except for a cobble section (1700m) on the local laps there are no noteworthy obstacles. The peloton will start the three local laps after the first crossing of the finish line in the Churchillaan after 147 kilometer. The fourth and last passage on the cobbles of the Broekstraat are situated 6 kilometer before the last corner, which is only 850 meter before the finish line of this 110th edition.

During his impressive season in 2015, Alexander Kristoff also added this oldest Flemish classic to his palmares. For his tenth participation, the Norwegian rider can rely on fast teammates such as Belgian riders Gerben Thijssen (4th in the GP Monseré, 5th in Bredene-Koksijde), Tom Devriendt (3x top 10 in Oman and the UAE), Baptiste Planckaert and Aimé De Gendt, Hungarian rider Barnabás Peák (2nd in Drenthe) and Dutchman Boy van Poppel. The riders will be directed by Steven De Neef and Pieter Vanspeybrouck.

The confidence I feel within Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux results from the programme with numerous sprint opportunities which was established for me by the Performance team and from the team built around me for these races. In general, my race calendar runs parallel to the trajectory of the other sprinters of the team, but this Wednesday I will line up alongside Alexander Kristoff. I can't wait to race alongside him and to learn from him during the race. Alexander is not only a true champion, he's also a strong personality. It would be an honor to prepare the sprint for him in Schoten
