Tirreno-Adriatico

Pozzovivo 12th in Bellante

The contenders for the general classification had the opportunity to battle against each other in the fourth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico (2.UWT). The final climb (4.2km at 5.7%) towards Bellante had to be covered three times in the final 50 kilometer of this stage connecting the Adriatic Sea through Abruzzo.

A breakaway of ten riders first rode in the lead for a long time, from 30 kilometer after the start in front of the waterfalls of Marmore. The peloton caught the majority of the breakaway after the first passage at the finish line, with the last escapee resisting until the final 13 kilometer, just after the second passage of the finish line.

Sven Erik Bystrøm, Domenico Pozzovivo and Lorenzo Rota started the final climb towards the finish in a reduced peloton. Despite the multiple accelerations, the difference was made in a sprint in the final hectometers. Pozzovivo finished with the best riders and crossed the line in twelfth place. His performance enabled him to climb into the top twenty of the provisional classification.

It is a good sign that I could finish with the best riders on this rather rolling climb. That I’m in the top twenty of the provisional classification after the first difficult stage is positive, especially taking into account the opening time trial. The next days I expect more possibilities for the GC contenders to make a difference and I want to take advantage of them to move further up in the classification. In tomorrow’s stage for example, which I consider as nervous and challenging. A couple of years ago we covered several laps on the final circuit and I remember that it was important to start the final climb in a good position.
