Trofeo Playa de Palma - Palma

Final sprint in Palma disturbed by crashes

The fifth and final one-day race of the Mallorca Challenge took place this Sunday with the Trofeo Playa de Palma (1.1, 30/01). A sprint was expected in the capital city of the Balearic Islands, and it is indeed how things turned out after the early breakaway of three riders were caught midway through the Coll de Sa Creu (9 km at 3%), which summit was located 35 km from the finish.

The riders of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux remained together as they prepared for the bunch sprint all day long, with both Alexander Kristoff and Biniam Girmay present to participate in the final. However, two crashes under the flamme rouge disturbed the events. Both Kristoff and Girmay finished in the top 20.

Today was the first time that we deployed our sprint train strategy around Alexander Kristoff. Unfortunately our chances were ruined by two crashes in the final kilometer. It's a real shame because until then the riders showed great teamwork and communication. Earlier on in the race, Kobe crashed and sustained some abrasions on his legs and hand, but at first glance it does not seem too serious. Apart from this hectic end, we can take a lot of positives out of our five-day stay in Mallorca. Everybody could see that the riders have come well prepared and we head now towards the next races with confidence.
