Julius Johansen in the front in his first Grand Tour

Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux was represented in the breakaway for the second time in this Vuelta thanks to Julius Johansen. The Danish rider, who is participating in his first Grand Tour, joined the breakaway of eighteen riders which was only formed after two hours of racing.

On a difficult course in the Basque Country, Johansen was present in the front until the Alto de Vivero, the principal attraction of the local circuit in Bilbao. In the end, Belgian rider Jan Bakelants was the first representant of the team at the finish line in thirteenth position. The climbers Louis Meintjes, Domenico Pozzovivo and Rein Taaramäe ended in the peloton with the rest of the favorites.

« Even though the course didn't really correspond with my qualities, I grabbed this opportunity to represent the team in the front of the race in my first Grand Tour. Yesterday I gave 100% to ensure that Gerben Thijssen could finish within the time limits, because he had a difficult day. Today I'm proud that I could follow the breakaway until the final circuit, because there were excellent riders who climb a lot better than me. The rest of the team could save energy for the next days, because there will be other nice opportunities for our climbers. »
